Believing In Yourself- Unlocking Your Inner Potential

Before we start, take a moment. Think back to your childhood and recall what you wanted to be when you grow up.

I am guessing the answers would range from a doctor, an astronaut to Superman and Iron-Man. Do you realize something? Even though these dreams don't make sense yet you said it with confidence. Why?

You BELIEVED in yourself!

Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right.

-Henry Ford

Right now we all are crushed under this rock of self-doubt. It hangs like a monster on our back. But if you realize there was a time when you believed in yourself so much that you thought you were going to become Iron-Man. It doesn’t matter if you did become one, what matters is the faith, the belief.

I know it seems like the same monotonous sentence. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. And I don’t think I am the most eligible person to talk to you about this.

Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.

– Suzy Kassem

But no dream can be seen if you restrict your imagination. Similarly, nothing can be achieved if you go with a feeling of doubt.

People have a tendency to give up with just a few setbacks, or maybe never even start because of the fear of those setbacks. But a few failures or setbacks are not the end. You must get back up again.

Easier said than done, right? Now all these are not some chemical experiments that there are set standards and procedures which everyone can follow to get the result.

It is an extremely personalized trial and error process. You can be nudged in the right direction but then everything depends on you.

Respect yourself

This is a very underrated thing. As a kid, we are often told that we should respect everyone, but no one has ever told us that we should also respect ourselves. You are a living, breathing being and you deserve all your respect.

Just like you respect someone else, respect yourself the same way. Self-respect is the path to self-believe.

It starts with You

You have to understand that this whole process is for Yourself only. Don’t do this for someone else, do it for YOURSELF. This journey begins with you, ends with you and you are the reason behind it.

Reinstate this in yourself daily. The moment you start doing do it for someone else, the whole meaning will be lost. REMIND yourself this, daily.

Accept

Before you begin the process, accept your current situation. Accept that it was your actions that lead you to this situation and you cannot do anything about it.

You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.

-Michael Jordan

You cannot change your past actions but you surely cannot let them direct your future. Maybe whatever you did in the past doesn’t seem like a good decision now but that’s okay. That was also a part of you and you have to accept that.

Examine your Feelings

Now, here comes a hard part. Question yourself why you feel what you feel? This can be tough but you need to introspect your fears and doubts and trace them back to their origins. This would give you a clear view of yourself. This would help you look at yourself from a different perspective.

When you realize the reasons behind your feeling, it’s easier to accept yourself and just love yourself. You may even be able to start believing in yourself after this only.

Get inspired.

It can be anything. Books, movies, stories of others, art, or anything that works for you. It is necessary that you surround yourself with positivity. This may require some major lifestyle changes but this would help you more than anything else. Condition your brain to believe in yourself. Half the battle is fought in our mind only.

Recall your Past Success

Why do you need to go somewhere else, when you can find your inspiration within your own self! I am sure you’ve had your moments of success. Remember them!

Make them your inspiration.

Always be yourself and have faith in yourself. Do not go out and look for a successful personality and try to duplicate it.

-Bruce Lee

It doesn’t have to be some great moment where you changed the course of history. It also includes those small tiny victories we have every day. When you figured out how to do laundry all on your own. Or when you cooked all on your own.

All these victories, no matter how small are your victories. Count them!

Take baby steps

When you want to change yourself, you are gonna have to do some hard work. It would make you uncomfortable for it is a step outside your comfort zone.

Don’t take a leap as your first step. Take small steps.

It doesn’t have to be anything big. Know what you need to accomplish each day and do it. Check things off.

If you have done a little thing well, you can do a bigger thing well too.

-David Storey

This would make you feel good about yourself, plus you make a move forward. Even an inch forward from your original place is a step ahead.

Set Goals

Continuing with the previous point, set goals for yourself. Set a target and aim to achieve it.

Set such goals, for which you need to work a little bit. Setting goals are the best way to face your fears!

Face your fear

We all have fear or one thing or other. This is basic human nature. But these emotions are placed in order to push us forward, not hold us back.

The faster you understand this, the easier it would be to actually face your fear. People with self-belief turn fear into action by focusing on their goals as part of their overall purpose in life.

Keep Moving Forward

Believe me, there are going to be days when nothing seems to work out and all you wanna do is give up. We all have such days, even the most confident ones. But those days are a reminder that we are on the right path. For obstacles are a sign that you are moving forward.

Failure is another stepping stone to greatness

-Oprah

On such days, give yourself a rest. Take a breath. Do not give up instead take a pause. Facing problems is not important, your reaction to them is. Don’t let them stop you. Let your life follow its own natural flow. When you learn to follow your life’s flow, you’ll realize that life is marvelous and precious. There is no point fretting over something you can’t control.

Let life come naturally to you and you make yourself adaptable to it. The harder you struggle, the longer you are going to be stuck in the same place. Move with life. This doesn’t mean to just surrender to the situations but it means to accept the situations you cannot change. Other than that, everything else is under your control!

Give yourself some credit

Don’t push yourself so hard. It’s okay if you fail every once in a while. It’s okay if you did not finish your set target. Do not go hard on yourself.

Confidence is preparation. Everything else is beyond your control.

-Richard Kline

You also have to forgive yourself for any failures or mistakes that you have committed in the past and move on.

Give yourself pep-talk

Talk to yourself! I know it sounds weird but self-approval is the best type of approval you can get. Applaud yourself for your every teeny-tiny success and motivate yourself after every failure.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

-Eleanor Roosevelt

We are the ones who create who we will become. You are your biggest challenge and motivator. No force in this world can motivate yourself as you.

I know all this seems so easy, but this is a journey. And now might be the time for you too!

So buckle up and arms-wide open begin on this journey.

You are your biggest cheerleader.

No one can replace you.

You are your biggest competition.

You only require you to be on your team and the world would be at your feet!
